my healing stones

bonnie, my friend, the native elder
offered my daughter
two palms and full of healing stones
now i play with, until my mind
overflows with, grace-filled healing!

these stones are not amethysts,
bloodstone or carnelian
neither are they red jasper,
white lace agate,
brown black purple white agate
the alias, coyomito agate

but simple stones of the simpleton
with red, pink, orange, and yellow
green, blue, indigo and violet

adding a few lime-green and blue-green
also silver-grey
brown, black, white, and gold

included among are some clear
but each one is powerful too

hoe, rake, and wheelbarrow

the hoe, the rake, and the wheelbarrow

my constant companions of yesteryear

provided me healing to body, mind

and my soul – transforming also land

the hoe, the rake, and the wheelbarrow

those simple tools with greater output

fed bigger mouths, with larger bellies

grounding me on the very real ground

the hoe, the rake, and the wheelbarrow

pen and pencil of the humble poor

writing on pages of mother earth

for me, the scholar to read, to live well

aging of the ocean

when i was nine

i have stood by the ocean

many times, to see her smiling

singing to me songs of hope

as i smiled with enormous amusement

observing her shore, fish that played

and coloured crabs that walked

sideways, all so close

but as i grew older

i have watched the sea aging

and now lying, an invalid

stinking with layers of rotten oil

as if she had never changed

her underclothes

and bathed not

for too many aeons
